There was no “fighting evil by moonlight”, but there was tons of walking, laughter and elevation changes! If you’re a Sailor Moon fan then this is definitely the adventure for you! Even if you’re not a Sailor Moon fan, manhole cover adventures is a HUGE past time in Japan. From collector cards to Facebook groups, meet ups and collector items this is one hobby that will definitely get your steps in!
If you are not a fan of the anime series then you would not know that Minato city is where the main character Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) and her friends lead their daily lives. While most of the manhole covers can be walked to after starting I would recommend taking the train if you’re doing it with Little’s. Be aware that some of the stations don’t have easily accessible elevators so if you have strollers this may make it a little bit longer
We started off our adventurous with the manhole cover closest to Shinagawa station. It’s on my Google list and features Sailor Venus (Minako Aino) color (yellow).
Next up is the manhole cover on my Google list featuring all the ladies with a blue background, the image color of Sailor Mercury. This cover is located near Shiba Park.
Next we decided to walk to the manhole cover on my list located near the Shiba water station. It took about 10 minutes and it was very easy to find, if there’s no car parked in front of it!
We took a quick lunch break after this so and then headed to the next manhole cover on my list.
Located outside Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin Elementary school and kindergarten in Roppongi , it’s said that this is the school that was the model for Sailor Mars’ (Hino Rei’s) school. The manhole cover has a red background which is her image color.
Wrapping up our walk in adventures was the manhole cover on my list featuring tuxedo mask!
Located at the entrance to the Azabu Juban shopping street it is where Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) and Mamoru Jiba (Tuxedo Mask) had their fateful reunion. The sign at the entrance to the shopping arcade, which was in place at the time of the serialization, also appears in the anime series.
Before you wrap up your adventures don’t forget to stop by the Minato City Tourist Information center to pick up your collectors card while supplies last. They also have a map that you can take home and other great information about this area of Tokyo so that you can come back and explore!!
